Day 39

Day 39: November 15th - San Salvador, El Salvador

***Hi All! Sorry it has taken so long to get the last few postings up. We were quite a busy bunch this past week and didn't have Internet access for most of the week. I have put up postings for Day 33 until present all in one go, so enjoy!***

Today was a pretty interesting day. We decided that we'd drive up to the crater of a volcano and take a peek. We drove up and up and up a mountain until we were about 2km from the crater, when the roads just got way too bad to continue. They were apparently being repaired, so I shudder to think of what the road looked like before it was fixed! We cut our losses and headed back down the volcano until we found a "mirador" (a lookout or viewing area). For the everyday low price of 50 cents per person we couldn't resist stopping there to see the view. We stayed for quite a long time and chatted with some local men who offered to buy us a drink and some sardines on tortillas. I passed on the sardines, but did try some fresh coconut juice and coconut meat from the shell which was rather nice. Jan had some of the sardines on a tortilla, and then hilarity ensued when he figured he'd also try a chili that they were eating. We stayed for a few beers, got in trouble by the policia when we tried to ride off on our bikes after.........okay, not really, we actually just posed the shot....but it makes it sound so much more adventurous! The men we were talking to had quite a good laugh when we tried to suggest that the police also owed 50 cents a head for use of the mirador.
